For a 3D2N to 8D7N Nihi Sumba trip from Bali, TMC is the airport that matters, because NIHI, Lelewatu and Cap Karoso all sit on the western side of the island. Sumba is larger than Bali and its roads are rough and partly unpaved, so a 3-4 day trip should stay on one side. Only a 7-8 day itinerary should be booked open-jaw: fly Bali to TMC, cross the island with a private 4×4 driver-guide, and fly home from WGP (or the reverse).
How long is the Bali to Sumba flight, and can you trust the timetable?
The DPS-TMC sector is roughly one hour in the air. Add boarding, taxiing and disembarkation and the airport-to-airport time is closer to two hours.
What you should not trust is any timetable printed on a travel blog, including this one. Carriers and frequencies on this route have shifted several times, and departure times move by season. Our practice:
- Check the current airline listings the week you book.
- Check again about 72 hours before departure, because retimings are usually pushed by SMS or email and are easy to miss.
- Send the final flight number to whoever is meeting you at TMC.
Bali-to-Sumba departures have tended to cluster in the morning, which suits the transfer logic below, but treat that as a tendency to verify, not a fact to plan around.
Why does a morning arrival at Tambolaka matter so much?
Because the airport is not the destination. From TMC you still have 50 to 90 minutes of driving to any of the three luxury lodges, on roads where you want daylight.

Most guests land at DPS on a long-haul flight and want to be on Sumba fast. This is the order of operations we use when building a quote:
- Book the two legs to fit each other. Separate tickets carry no protection if the international flight is late. For long-haul arrivals, one night near the airport and a morning flight the next day is the arrangement that fails least.
- Clear immigration and customs first. Visa on arrival, bag collection and customs at DPS take time, and the domestic terminal is a separate walk.
- Pay the Bali levy in advance so it does not become a queue.
- Re-check the domestic departure time 72 hours out and confirm the flight number with the lodge or with Indonesia Juara Trip.
- Match the resort transfer to the flight number, not the clock, so the driver tracks the actual arrival.
- Pre-register any surfboard or oversize bag.
- Book early for June to August. Peak months need advance booking of villas, cars and guides because high-end room supply on the island is small, and flights in that window fill too.
When is the best time of year to fly to Sumba?
The dry season runs roughly May to October, and several Sumba-focused planners call June to September the sweet spot. A 30-year satellite analysis flags June, July and August as ideal, with about 30°C average temperatures and roughly a 9 percent chance of rain; dry-season rainfall drops to a few millimetres a month, against 200 mm-plus in parts of the wet season.
September and October bring fewer visitors and somewhat lower prices than June to August, which for many guests is the better trade. April and November are mixed shoulder months. In January or February, plan a one-side-of-the-island trip, morning flights, and patience with delays.
