The honest version is that each island wins three of the six things honeymooners tend to ask us about. Which three matter to you decides the trip.

Who should choose Sumba for their honeymoon?
Sumba is the right call if most of the following describe you:
- You want to see almost nobody outside your own party for a week.
- One superb beach and one excellent kitchen is enough; you are not collecting restaurants.
- You like the idea of horses on the sand, a surf break the resort is known for, and megalithic villages within a driver-guide day.
- You would rather pay one confirmed price than track fifty receipts.
- You have at least four nights. Three at NIHI is possible, but the travel day each way eats into it.

- You have three nights or fewer and cannot spare a travel day in each direction.
- One of you wants calm, swimmable water every afternoon. Nusa Dua and Sanur deliver that; the Sumba west coast often does not.
- You like a cheap, excellent massage at 4 pm without booking ahead.
- Your budget is driven by nightly room rate, and you want to spread it across two or three very different properties.
Bali’s honeymoon infrastructure is deep for a reason. No shame in choosing it.

Can you combine Bali and Sumba on one honeymoon?
Yes, and for couples with eight or more nights it is often the best answer to the whole “versus” question. The usual shape is three or four Bali nights first, for dining, spa and jet-lag recovery, then the domestic hop to Tambolaka and four or five Sumba nights for the privacy.
Two practical notes. Transiting Bali triggers the IDR 150,000 levy even if you never leave the airport hotel. And DPS to TMC schedules change through the year, so never lock non-refundable resort nights until the flight is ticketed.

Which months give the best sunsets and calm seas in Sumba?
The Wanokaka coast faces the open Indian Ocean, so the sun drops into the sea rather than behind a headland. What changes month to month is cloud, rain and swell.

Is the sea at Nihi Sumba calm enough for honeymoon swimming, or is it a surf beach?
Both, depending on the day. The resort’s coast is known for its surf break, and dry-season swell from the west and south is the most consistent of the year, so plan on a pool, tide-timed swims and beach walks. For lagoon-calm water, a driver-guide day to Weekuri lagoon in Kodi, Southwest Sumba, is the reliable option.
Do we pay Bali’s tourism levy if we only transit Bali on the way to Sumba?
Yes. Bali’s levy of IDR 150,000 per international visitor has applied since 14 February 2024 and is triggered by transiting Bali, not by the length of your stay. Sumba then adds its own airport tourist tax of IDR 50,000 on arrival, per the fee guide updated 19 August 2026. Budget both as fixed arrival costs.
How many nights should a Bali-plus-Sumba honeymoon split between the two islands?
For eight nights, we usually suggest three or four in Bali first and four or five in Sumba, because Sumba needs a travel day each way and rewards a longer, slower stay. With fewer than seven nights, pick one island. The two-island version is planned by our sister flagship rather than this desk.
