Nihi Sumba Trip 5 Days 4 Nights: Two Itineraries & Costs

**A Nihi Sumba trip of 5 days 4 nights gives three excursion days between two flight days. Base all four nights at NIHI Sumba or a comparable Wanokaka lodge, or split three nights West with one night in Central Sumba for megaliths and Matayangu falls. Land-only pricing runs USD 459-850 per person as of 2026; the resort is quoted separately.**

> We are an independent Sumba travel provider (Indonesia Juara Trip). This website is not owned, operated, sponsored by, or affiliated with NIHI Sumba. NIHI Sumba is mentioned as one accommodation option; bookings are subject to the hotel’s confirmation and terms.

Which 5-day shape should you choose?

Five days keeps you on the west side: Sumba is larger than Bali with rough, partly unpaved roads, and Waingapu in the east belongs to the 7-8 day crossing. Both versions fly Bali (DPS) to Tambolaka (TMC), about an hour in the air; schedules change, so flight times go on your quote. From TMC, Wanokaka on the Sumba Barat coast is roughly 60-90 minutes by road.

Option A, the beach base, puts all four nights at NIHI Sumba, Lelewatu or a comparable Wanokaka lodge: one unpack, surf and spa afternoons, the easiest shape for families or any wet-season month. Option B keeps three Wanokaka nights and moves inland for the fourth, near Waikabubak or Anakalang, so the megalithic villages and Matayangu get a full morning; the price is one repack and a simpler lodge.

Cap Karoso, at Karoso Beach in Kodi, Sumba Barat Daya, is about 50 minutes from TMC by the resort’s estimate; as a base it flips the geography.

How does Option A run day by day?

Day Route (indicative drive) What fills the day Night
1 Fly DPS-TMC, drive 60-90 min Arrive, settle in, first sunset on the beach Wanokaka
2 Wanokaka coast, short hops Marosi and Kerewei beaches, surf or spa, village walk Wanokaka
3 Kodi loop, roughly 2 hours each way Ratenggaro, Weekuri lagoon (IDR 20,000 per person), Mandorak Wanokaka
4 Lapopu and Waikabubak, about 1-1.5 hours out Lapopu waterfall, a hilltop traditional village above Waikabubak Wanokaka
5 Drive 60-90 min to TMC Breakfast, checkout, fly to Bali

How does Option B split West and Central Sumba?

Day Route (indicative drive) What fills the day Night
1 Fly DPS-TMC, drive 60-90 min Arrive, beach evening Wanokaka
2 Kodi loop, roughly 2 hours each way Ratenggaro, Weekuri lagoon, Mandorak Wanokaka
3 Wanokaka coast Marosi or Kerewei morning, surf or spa, Lapopu after lunch Wanokaka
4 Via Waikabubak to Central Sumba, 2-3 hours in stages Megalithic villages around Anakalang, Matayangu waterfall trek Central Sumba lodge
5 Central Sumba to TMC, about 1.5-2 hours Early breakfast, fly to Bali

The inland night is the honest compromise: Central Sumba has guesthouses and small lodges, not resorts. The team names the best available property for your dates before you decide.

What does a 5 days 4 nights Sumba trip cost?

Indonesia Juara Trip’s land-only ladder, published on luxurysumba.com/sumba-trip-cost as of 2026, lists three 5D4N tiers, all land-only and excluding the resort.

5D4N tier Per person, land-only, excludes resort (as of 2026) Same tier at 4D3N / 6D5N
Tier 1 USD 459 USD 390 / USD 570
Tier 2 USD 700 USD 490 / USD 1,020
Tier 3 USD 850 USD 570 / not published

What each tier bundles in vehicle, guide and extras is itemised on your quote, not assumed here.

The room is the second number. NIHI Sumba’s public rates and inclusions page states that all room rates are exclusive of a 21 percent government tax and service charge; its price document dated March 2026 quotes in IDR with USD converted at the prevailing rate, and on-island experiences are priced separately per person or per couple. We quote nightly rates dated from the resort’s current sheet and never print a package total: resort nights plus land-only plus flights is a figure the Indonesia Juara Trip team confirms in writing after checking availability with the hotel.

What is included and what is not?

Typical land-only inclusions, confirmed on your quote:

  • Private transfers between TMC and your lodge
  • Private 4×4 with English-speaking driver-guide on all three excursion days
  • Route planning, village permissions and etiquette briefing
  • For Option B, the Central Sumba lodge night with breakfast

Never included in the land-only price:

  • Resort nights at NIHI Sumba, Lelewatu, Cap Karoso or any villa, their 21 percent tax and service, and resort experiences, spa or meals outside the plan
  • Flights DPS-TMC-DPS
  • Sumba airport tourist tax, IDR 50,000 (about USD 3.50) on arrival, per the fee guide updated 19 August 2026
  • Bali tourism levy, IDR 150,000 per international visitor, triggered by transiting Bali since 14 February 2024
  • Visa on arrival, 30 days, about IDR 500,000
  • Village contributions IDR 20,000-50,000 (up to IDR 100,000 in some regencies), waterfall and lagoon fees IDR 20,000-200,000, drone fees around IDR 200,000

What changes if you travel in the wet season?

Sumba’s wet season runs November to April, heaviest in January and February: afternoon downpours, workable mornings, 26-31°C. Mud and swollen rivers in those two months stretch every West-to-Central transfer, so the 5-day plan swaps rather than cancels.

Dry-season plan Wet-season swap
Option B inland night Switch to Option A; Central Sumba as a morning-only day trip
Matayangu trek Lapopu waterfall, shorter approach, or a village-only day
Kodi loop Leave by 7 am, back at the lodge by early afternoon
Day-5 flight Driver checks the road the evening before; leave earlier if needed

May to October is dry; several Sumba planners call June to September the sweet spot, and a 30-year satellite analysis flags June, July and August at about 30°C with roughly a 9 percent chance of rain. Those months book out first because high-end room supply is small; September and October run quieter and somewhat cheaper.

How does booking work?

  1. Send your brief. Month, party size, Option A or B, lodge preference.
  2. We check the room. The team asks the hotel directly for availability; nothing is held until you say so, and every hotel booking stays subject to that hotel’s confirmation and terms.
  3. One written quote. Land-only tier, resort nights dated with tax and service shown separately, flights if you want them handled.
  4. You confirm. Deposit and cancellation terms are on the quote; the resort’s own terms apply to the room.
  5. Pre-departure pack. Transfer times, guide contact, a fee cash list, and a reminder to file the electronic customs and health declarations within three days of arrival.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 5 days 4 nights enough to see West and Central Sumba from Wanokaka?

Yes, if you stay on the west side. Three excursion days cover the Wanokaka coast, the Kodi loop and either Lapopu or the Central Sumba megaliths. East Sumba and Waingapu need the 7-8 day crossing; forcing them into five days puts most of the trip in a 4×4.

Can a 5-day trip include one night in Central Sumba without losing beach time?

Option B keeps three coastal nights and moves inland only on the fourth. Beach mornings on days 2 and 3 stay intact; the cost is one repack and a simpler lodge near Waikabubak or Anakalang, chosen by the team from what is available on your dates.

Does the USD 459 land-only rate for 5D4N include the NIHI Sumba room?

No. USD 459, 700 and 850 per person, as of 2026, are land-only tiers covering transfers, 4×4, driver-guide and planning. Resort nights are quoted separately from the hotel’s own 2026 rate sheet, exclusive of 21 percent tax and service; the team confirms the total in writing.

Can the 5-day itinerary run in January or February?

It can, as Option A. Mornings are usually workable, but mud and swollen rivers stretch drives, so the inland night and the Matayangu trek are swapped out, excursions start early, and the driver checks the day-5 road the evening before. Expect 26-31°C and afternoon downpours.
