Nihi Sumba Trip 8 Days 7 Nights: Full-Island Itinerary

**A Nihi Sumba trip of 8 days and 7 nights covers all four Sumba regencies without rushing: three nights in Wanokaka at NIHI Sumba or Lelewatu (one a rest day), two in Kodi at Cap Karoso or a villa, two near Waingapu, arriving Tambolaka and departing Waingapu. Land logistics by Indonesia Juara Trip; the total is a confirmed quote.**

It is the longest explore-Sumba format we plan, with a private 4×4 driver-guide throughout.

We are an independent Sumba travel provider (Indonesia Juara Trip). This website is not owned, operated, sponsored by, or affiliated with NIHI Sumba. NIHI Sumba is mentioned as one accommodation option; bookings are subject to the hotel’s confirmation and terms.

Why does the full island need eight days?

Sumba is larger than Bali, and its roads are rough and partly unpaved. A 3- or 4-day trip should stay in one region. At seven or eight days, crossing from the Wanokaka coast to Waingapu becomes sensible: one long transfer day, and a rest day still fits.

Open-jaw routing does the work: into Tambolaka (TMC), out of Umbu Mehang Kunda in Waingapu (WGP), no backtracking. Bali to TMC is a domestic flight of about one hour; schedules change, so we confirm flights at quote stage rather than publishing timetables.

How does the route run region by region?

Day Regency Base (nights) The day Road note (indicative)
1 West Sumba Wanokaka: NIHI Sumba or Lelewatu (1-3) Arrive TMC, transfer to the coast 60-90 minutes, conditions vary
2 West Sumba Wanokaka Lapopu waterfall, Waikabubak hill villages, Marosi or Kerewei beach Half-day loops
3 West Sumba Wanokaka Rest day: surf, spa, horses, or nothing No driving
4 Southwest Sumba Kodi: Cap Karoso or a villa (4-5) Coastal transfer via Ratenggaro and Mandorak 2-3 hours with stops
5 Southwest Sumba Kodi Weekuri lagoon early, Kodi villages, Karoso Beach Short hops
6 Central Sumba (transit) Waingapu-area villa (6-7) Megalithic villages near Anakalang, Matayangu falls if time allows 6-8 hours, dawn start
7 East Sumba Waingapu area Wairinding at first light, Tanggedu or Puru Kambera, Walakiri at sunset Two long stops
8 East Sumba Depart WGP Airport transfer 20-40 minutes

A two-lodge version drops the Kodi overnight: four nights in Wanokaka with Weekuri and Ratenggaro as one long day trip, then three in the east. One fewer check-in, more driving on day 4.

Which lodges fit the ladder?

Lodge Location (verified 15 September 2026) From TMC Role Rate note, as of 2026
NIHI Sumba Hoba Wawi, Wanokaka, West Sumba Regency 60-90 minutes by road Nights 1-3, rest day Resort’s 2026 price document (March 2026) quotes IDR, USD at the prevailing rate; exclusive of 21 percent tax and service
Lelewatu Wanokaka, West Sumba, about 63 km from TMC 1-1.5 hours Nights 1-3 alternative On request; airport transfers per resort offers
Cap Karoso Karoso Beach, Kodi, Southwest Sumba Regency About 50 minutes, resort estimate Nights 4-5 On request
Boutique villa, Waingapu area East Sumba Regency Via WGP Nights 6-7 On request; supply is small

These are accommodation options, not partners; each hotel confirms availability, and a nightly figure seen elsewhere is not the invoice figure once tax and service are added.

What does a Nihi Sumba trip of 8 days cost?

We do not publish a package total; a total with a resort inside it must be checked against live availability and the day’s exchange rate. What we can show is Indonesia Juara Trip’s land-only ladder.

Format Land-only per person, excludes resort (luxurysumba.com/sumba-trip-cost, as of 2026) Notes
4D3N USD 390 / 490 / 570 Three tiers by vehicle and guide level
5D4N USD 459 / 700 / 850 Three tiers
6D5N USD 570 / 1,020 Two tiers
7D6N and 8D7N Quoted on request, land-only Cross-island routing priced per itinerary
Resort nights Separate line, per hotel confirmation NIHI adds 21 percent tax and service

Your quote lists land services and each hotel separately, so moving a night between lodges shows its effect.

What is included and what is not?

How should the Pasola-season variant be built?

Pasola, the mounted spear-throwing ritual of West and Southwest Sumba, runs in February and March, with dates set locally only weeks ahead. That is the wet season: afternoon downpours, workable mornings, and January-February mud and swollen rivers that make the cross-island leg unreliable.

So the Pasola variant stays west: four nights in Wanokaka, three in Kodi, in and out through TMC. The rest day floats until the date is announced; book lodges first, flights once the window is confirmed.

What changes in the photography variant?

June to September is when Sumba’s savannah goes gold; a 30-year satellite analysis flags June, July and August at about 30°C with roughly a 9 percent chance of rain. This variant places the East Sumba nights nearer the hills so Wairinding is reachable before sunrise, and holds Walakiri for the last hour of light.

Two rules from local guides: ask before photographing people or homes, and budget the drone fee per site. Village etiquette is why we use guides rather than self-drive.

How do you pace Sumba’s roads?

  • Two significant stops a day, not four. Map distances lie.
  • Villages in the morning, beaches in the afternoon.
  • One dawn start for the cross-island day, broken at Anakalang.
  • Rest day mid-way through the west-coast block.
  • June-August is peak: villas, cars and guides book out because high-end room supply is small. September-October means fewer visitors and somewhat lower prices; April and November are mixed shoulder months.

How does booking work?

  1. Send your travel month and lodge preference by WhatsApp 628119941919 or sales@indonesiajuara.asia, with group size and any Pasola or photography interest.
  2. We check availability with each hotel and hold the driver-guide and vehicle.
  3. You receive a day-by-day plan and written quote, land and each hotel on separate lines, tax and service shown where it applies.
  4. You confirm; the deposit follows each hotel’s own terms, forwarded unchanged.
  5. Pre-trip file with flight guidance, fee list, packing notes and your driver-guide’s contact.

Plan your Nihi Sumba trip of 8 days and 7 nights. Tell the Indonesia Juara Trip team your month and preferred lodge on WhatsApp 628119941919 or at sales@indonesiajuara.asia. We confirm availability, transfers and the total before you commit to anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an 8-day Sumba itinerary that balances beach time and cultural excursions?

Three nights in Wanokaka with a full rest day, two in Kodi for Weekuri and Ratenggaro, and two near Waingapu for Wairinding and Walakiri. That gives four beach-heavy days and three village or landscape days, with the cross-island drive on day six. Swap a village stop for a surf morning if the swell runs.

Should I fly into one part of Sumba and out of another on an 8-day trip?

Yes. Arrive at Tambolaka (TMC) for the west coast lodges and depart from Waingapu (WGP) after the East Sumba nights, or reverse it. Open-jaw routing removes a full day of backtracking. Domestic schedules change, so we confirm the pair of flights at quote stage rather than publishing times.

Is it realistic to change lodges three times in eight days without losing too much time in transit?

Yes, if the transfers are the sightseeing. Wanokaka to Kodi runs along the coast past Ratenggaro; Kodi to Waingapu crosses Central Sumba’s megalithic villages. Two check-ins after the first is the practical limit; four would turn the trip into packing. The two-lodge version exists for those who prefer fewer moves.

How much does an 8-day Sumba trip with NIHI and two other lodges cost?

We do not publish a total. Indonesia Juara Trip’s land-only ladder, as of 2026, runs USD 390-570 for 4D3N up to USD 1,020 for 6D5N per person, and 8D7N is quoted on request. Resort nights are separate; NIHI’s 2026 rates are exclusive of 21 percent tax and service. The team confirms the full figure.
