Where is NIHI Sumba, and which airport do I fly into?

Where is NIHI Sumba? At Hoba Wawi village, Wanokaka district, West Sumba Regency, on the island’s south-west coast. Lelewatu sits in the same district; Cap Karoso is further west at Karoso Beach, Kodi, Southwest Sumba Regency (geography verified 15 September 2026).

Which airport serves NIHI Sumba? Tambolaka, officially Lede Kalumbang Airport (TMC). Waingapu (WGP) serves East Sumba and only makes sense if you are crossing the island. See the [airport transfer page](/nihi-sumba-airport-transfer/).

How far is NIHI from Tambolaka? Around 60-90 minutes by road; conditions vary by season. Cap Karoso quotes about 50 minutes from TMC; Lelewatu is roughly 63 km, or 1-1.5 hours.

How do I get to NIHI Sumba from Bali? A domestic flight from Denpasar (DPS) to TMC takes about one hour, then a private car. Schedules change, so we never publish timetables.

How do nightly rates, the 21 percent tax and service charge work?

How much does NIHI Sumba cost per night? The resort quotes its 2026 rates in IDR, with USD converted at the prevailing rate and the final charge based on the rate at payment (price document dated March 2026); on-island experiences are priced separately. Indicative, dated figures are on the [room rates page](/nihi-sumba-room-rates-2026/).

What is the 21 percent? NIHI’s public rates page states that all room rates exclude a 21 percent government tax and service charge. Add it before comparing with resorts that quote inclusive prices.

How much does a whole Sumba trip cost? Indonesia Juara Trip’s land-only ladder, as of 2026, is below. It excludes the resort; a total with NIHI or another lodge is only ever issued as a confirmed quote. Breakdown on the [trip cost page](/nihi-sumba-trip-cost/).

Duration Land-only, per person (as of 2026) Resort included?
4D3N USD 390 / 490 / 570 No, quoted separately
5D4N USD 459 / 700 / 850 No, quoted separately

How do I book NIHI Sumba, independently or through an agent?

Can I book NIHI Sumba independently? Yes. Contact the resort directly, pay under its terms, and arrange flights and ground logistics yourself.

What does an agent add that booking direct does not? Everything outside the gate. We request availability from the hotel on your behalf, hold nothing until it confirms, and build transfers, driver-guide and island days around the dates it gives back. NIHI is an accommodation option, not our partner. See [booking through a local agent](/book-nihi-sumba-with-local-agent/).

How does booking work with us?

  1. Send dates, party size and preferred lodge to WhatsApp 628119941919 or sales@indonesiajuara.asia.
  2. We reply with a day-by-day draft, a land-only estimate and the hotel’s indicative rate with the 21 percent shown separately.
  3. We request the room; you receive the hotel’s confirmation and payment terms.
  4. Flights are booked once the room is confirmed, never before.
  5. A deposit secures car, guide and village arrangements; the final itinerary arrives two weeks out.

How far in advance should I book?

Travel month Lead time Why
June to August 4-6 months Peak; high-end room supply on Sumba is small
September to October 2-3 months Fewer visitors, somewhat lower prices
December to March 4-6 weeks Wet season; check the hotel’s calendar first

Season detail lives on the [dry season](/nihi-sumba-trip-in-dry-season/) and [rainy season](/nihi-sumba-trip-in-rainy-season/) pages.

How many days do I need, and when should I go?

How many days in Sumba with a NIHI stay? Three nights at one lodge plus one region is the minimum; four to five nights adds Southwest Sumba; seven to eight days can cross the island, arriving TMC and departing WGP. Compare the [4D3N](/nihi-sumba-luxury-package-4d3n/), [5D4N](/nihi-sumba-luxury-package-5d4n/) and [8D7N](/sumba-trip-8d7n-including-nihi/) plans.

Wet or dry season? Dry runs roughly May to October; June to September is the sweet spot, with daytime highs of 27-32°C and a few millimetres of rain a month. The wet season, November to April, peaks in January and February with afternoon downpours and workable mornings; mud and swollen rivers then stretch west-east transfers, so we do not sell a 3-4 day cross-island circuit in those months.

Who is NIHI right for: families, honeymooners, or someone who wants an alternative?

Is NIHI Sumba good for families? Practical if you accept long, rough drives between sights; a private 4×4 driver-guide and one base rather than two keep it easy. See the [private guide page](/nihi-sumba-private-guide/).

Is NIHI Sumba good for a honeymoon? It is the most requested honeymoon stay we handle on Sumba, usually paired with one quiet inland day; see the [honeymoon trip page](/nihi-sumba-honeymoon-trip/).

Where else can I stay? Lelewatu (Wanokaka, West Sumba), Cap Karoso (Kodi, Southwest Sumba), Maringi Eco Resort and boutique villas, compared plainly on [Sumba luxury without NIHI](/sumba-luxury-trip-without-nihi/). Splitting nights between two lodges is covered on the [NIHI and Lelewatu combined trip](/nihi-sumba-and-lelewatu-combined-trip/).

What about roads, safety, packing and local fees?

Do you need a 4×4 in Sumba? Beyond the resort gate, yes. Sumba is larger than Bali with partly unpaved roads; a private driver-guide is the practical way to move, and routing is mapped on the [west and east itinerary](/sumba-luxury-itinerary-west-and-east/).

Is Sumba safe for independent travellers? Generally yes; the real risks are road conditions, distance from hospitals and sun. Village etiquette (modest dress, permission before photographing people or homes) is why we always use a local guide.

What should I pack?

  • Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and a light long-sleeve layer for villages
  • Closed shoes for waterfalls, sandals for the coast
  • Cash in IDR for village contributions and small fees
  • A light rain shell from November to April

What fees should I budget? As of 2026, per a Sumba fee guide updated 19 August 2026 and the Sumba FAQ of 10 September 2026:

Item Amount
Sumba airport tourist tax, on arrival IDR 50,000 (about USD 3.50)
Traditional village contribution IDR 20,000-50,000; up to IDR 100,000 in some regencies
Waterfalls and lagoons IDR 20,000-200,000 (Weekuri IDR 20,000 per person)
Drone fee About IDR 200,000
Bali tourism levy, if transiting Bali IDR 150,000 per international visitor, since 14 February 2024
Visa on arrival, 30 days About IDR 500,000; e-declarations within three days of arrival

Fees vary by regency and change without notice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if NIHI Sumba has no availability on my dates?

We tell you as soon as the hotel replies, then offer three routes: shift the dates a few days either side, split the stay with Lelewatu in the same Wanokaka district, or base at Cap Karoso in Kodi. Nothing is charged until a room is confirmed by the lodge you choose.

Do I pay NIHI Sumba directly, or does Indonesia Juara Trip collect the room payment?

The room is confirmed under the hotel’s deposit schedule and cancellation terms, which we forward unchanged, and the confirmation states where that payment goes. Indonesia Juara Trip invoices only what sits outside the gate: airport transfers, the private 4×4 driver-guide, village contributions and island days. Each cost stays traceable to its provider.

Does booking through Indonesia Juara Trip make a NIHI Sumba room cheaper than booking direct?

Not as a rule, and we never promise it. The rate we forward is the hotel’s rate for your dates, with the 21 percent tax and service shown separately. What changes is everything else: one driver-guide, one route, one point of contact, and a land-only price fixed before you fly.

How current are the prices, fees and travel times on this FAQ page?

Every figure carries its source date: NIHI’s rate document of March 2026, a Sumba fee guide updated 19 August 2026, the Sumba FAQ of 10 September 2026 and geography verified 15 September 2026. Travel times are indicative, never timetabled. We re-check each number against the hotel and the road before quoting.
