Getting from Tambolaka airport to NIHI Sumba

It is a road transfer of roughly an hour and a half across the middle of West Sumba. Not long, but long enough that the flight time decides your first afternoon.

In short

Allow about an hour and a half by road from Tambolaka to the Wanokaka coast, on current roads. There is no other way in — no helicopter service you can book on the day, and no closer airstrip.

The drive

What the hour and a half is like

It is not a dull transfer, and on a first day it doubles as the introduction to the island.

  1. Open grass hills and the road through Sumba 01

    Out of Tambolaka

The road leaves town and climbs into farmland almost immediately. Sealed the whole way, so any car does it.

    The road south

  2. The peaked roofs of Prai Ijing village, West Sumba 02

    Through the villages

The route passes peaked-roof hamlets and ridge country. On a morning arrival we can stop at one without costing you the afternoon.

    West Sumba villages

  3. Sunset over the coast at Pero, Kodi 03

    Down to the coast

The last stretch drops toward the south coast. On a late flight this is the part you do in the dark, which is the argument for a morning arrival.

  4. A car on the ridge road through the Sumba hills 04

    Who is driving

Your own driver and car for the trip, not a one-off shuttle. The same vehicle is with you every day after this one.

The resort runs its own arrival arrangements for guests. If you are using theirs, we plan around it rather than duplicating it.

Three things that change the timing

The hour and a half is a fair average. These move it.

  • What time you land

Daylight makes the drive worth something. After dark it is just a transfer.

  • Road works

Sections get resurfaced without notice. We check the route before the day rather than quoting last season’s time.

  • Exactly where you are staying

The Wanokaka coast is not one point. Twenty minutes either way depending on the property.

The figure on this page is an approximation on current roads, confirmed in writing at itinerary stage.
