Which day trips can you run from Wanokaka?
NIHI Sumba sits at Hoba Wawi in Wanokaka, on the south coast of West Sumba Regency; Lelewatu is in the same district. West Sumba is within an hour, Central Sumba within two, and the Kodi coast of Southwest Sumba at the far end of a long day. East Sumba is not a day trip; Waingapu belongs to a cross-island itinerary of seven days or more. The same driver can meet your Tambolaka (TMC) flight and run the 60-90 minute road leg to the gate.

Why does the guide handle etiquette and contributions?
Because a kampung is somebody’s home. The guide asks the village head for permission before you step past the stone tombs, asks again before any camera is raised at a person or a house, and hands over the contribution so nobody negotiates in the courtyard. Modest dress is expected, shoulders and knees covered; a sarong is the easiest fix, which is why one rides in the car. Can a private guide collect me inside NIHI Sumba, or only at the gate?
At the gate, as a rule. Wanokaka lodges keep outside vehicles at the entrance and move guests there themselves, so plan on meeting the 4×4 there. Tell reception the evening before that a private car is coming; the guide messages you on arrival with the plate number.

Is Ratenggaro a realistic day trip from Wanokaka?
Yes in the dry season, with a departure before 07:00. Count 2.5-3.5 hours each way on mixed road, two to three hours in Kodi for Ratenggaro, Wainyapu and Mandorak, and Weekuri lagoon if the light holds. In January and February we do not quote it: mud and river crossings turn a long day into a lost one.
