Can You Explore Sumba From NIHI Resort? Day-Trip Radius From Wanokaka
Yes. From NIHI Sumba’s position at Hoba Wawi, Wanokaka, you can reach most of West Sumba’s headline sights on half-day or full-day drives with a private 4×4: Waikabubak’s megalithic villages, Lapopu waterfall, Marosi and Kerewei beaches, and the Kodi coast (Ratenggaro, Weekuri, Mandorak). East Sumba is not a day trip; it needs a second base.
Wanokaka sits on the south coast of West Sumba Regency, roughly 60-90 minutes from Tambolaka airport (TMC), and that puts a useful slice of the island within a day’s drive. How wide that slice is depends on road conditions, season and how early you are willing to leave. Everything below applies equally to Lelewatu, which is also in Wanokaka, about 63 km from TMC.
One honesty note before the tables. Nihi Sumba Trip is an independent Sumba trip planning desk run by Indonesia Juara Trip. This site is not owned, managed, sponsored by, or affiliated with NIHI Sumba; the resort is one of several lodging options we plan around, and any stay there is subject to the hotel’s own confirmation and terms.
How far can you actually get from Wanokaka in one day?
Sumba is bigger than Bali, and much of its road network is narrow, winding and only partly paved. A distance that would take 30 minutes in Bali often takes an hour here. The figures below are indicative one-way drive times from Wanokaka as of 2026, based on dry-season conditions with a private driver; add 20-40 percent in the wet months.
| Destination | Region | Indicative one-way drive | Half or full day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wanokaka villages and Pasola field (Waihura, Praigoli) | West Sumba | 10-25 minutes | Half day |
| Marosi and Kerewei beaches (Lamboya) | West Sumba | 30-60 minutes | Half day |
| Waikabubak megalithic villages (Praijing, Tarung, Waitabar) | West Sumba | 45-75 minutes | Half day |
| Lapopu waterfall (Manupeu Tanah Daru) | West Sumba | 75-105 minutes plus a 15-20 minute walk | Long half day |
| Ratenggaro village and beach (Kodi) | Southwest Sumba | 2.5-3 hours | Full day |
| Weekuri lagoon (Kodi) | Southwest Sumba | 2.5-3 hours | Full day |
| Mandorak beach (Kodi) | Southwest Sumba | 2.5-3 hours | Full day |
The closest cluster, Wanokaka itself plus Lamboya’s beaches, can be done between breakfast and a late lunch. The Kodi coast in Southwest Sumba is a long, worthwhile day rather than an impossible one, provided you leave by 7 am.
This is the logic behind our 4 days 3 nights trip: one base in Wanokaka, two full excursion days, no re-packing. A three-night stay comfortably absorbs one half-day near the resort and one long day to Kodi.
What separates a half day from a full day?
A useful rule for Sumba: if the one-way drive is under 90 minutes, it is a half day; if it is over two hours, treat it as a full day and do not stack another destination on top. Time on the ground matters as much as time in the car.
- Half-day format (4-5 hours door to door): one megalithic village with a local guide, or two beaches, or Lapopu with the walk down to the pools. Leave after breakfast, back by 2 pm.
- Full-day format (9-11 hours door to door): the Kodi loop of Ratenggaro, Mandorak and Weekuri, with lunch packed or eaten at a warung near Ratenggaro. Leave by 7 am, back before dark; Sumba roads are unlit and livestock wander onto them after sunset.
- Do not combine: Lapopu and Kodi on the same day. They lie in opposite directions from Wanokaka, and the combined drive tops seven hours.
Why is East Sumba not a day trip from NIHI?
Because the numbers do not close. Waingapu, the East Sumba gateway, sits around 170 km from Wanokaka by way of Waikabubak and the Trans-Sumba road. In good conditions that is five to six hours one way; the East Sumba sights are then a further 30 minutes to two hours beyond Waingapu.
| East Sumba destination | Indicative one-way from Wanokaka | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Wairinding hills | 5-6 hours | Overnight required |
| Walakiri beach (mangrove sunset) | 5.5-6.5 hours | Overnight required |
| Puru Kambera savannah | 5.5-6.5 hours | Overnight required |
| Tanggedu waterfall | 7-8 hours plus a hike | Two nights recommended |
A day trip would mean 11-13 hours in a 4×4 for perhaps 45 minutes at one viewpoint, and in January and February swollen rivers and mud can add hours more. Guests who want both coasts need a 7- or 8-day itinerary: fly into Tambolaka, base in Wanokaka for three or four nights, drive east with stops in Central Sumba’s megalithic villages, then fly home from Waingapu (WGP). Three- and four-night trips stay on one side of the island.
Resort-arranged excursions or an independent driver-guide?
Both work, and many guests use a mix. The difference is scope, pricing structure and who holds the itinerary.
| Factor | Resort-arranged excursion | Independent private driver-guide |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing (as of 2026) | NIHI’s March 2026 price document lists on-island experiences separately per person or per couple in IDR; room rates exclude a 21 percent government tax and service charge | Indonesia Juara Trip’s Sumba Private Trip 4D3N is priced per person by group size (2–10 guests), including twin-share hotel, entrance fees and 9 meals: USD 390–700 per person in its 2025 USD table, and Rp 5,600,000–10,600,000 per person in its 2026 IDR table, as listed on Indonesia Juara Trip (checked 2026-09-16). |
| Radius | Built around Wanokaka, Lamboya and Waikabubak | Anywhere the road allows, including Kodi full days and cross-island transfers to Waingapu |
| Village access | Arranged by the resort’s own team | Arranged by a Sumbanese guide who handles contributions and etiquette on your behalf |
| Flexibility | Fixed departure formats | Change the day’s route at breakfast if the swell or weather shifts |
| Booking | Through the resort at check-in or before | Confirmed before arrival, with the same car and guide for the whole stay |
A private 4×4 driver-guide is the only realistic way to cover the Kodi coast in one day from Wanokaka and the only way to convert a NIHI stay into a cross-island trip. Resort excursions suit guests who want one or two easy outings without planning. Package totals that include the resort are issued only as a confirmed quote, never as a published figure.
Fees per destination are small but frequent. Laguna Waikuri (Weekuri) entry fee is IDR 20,000 per foreign adult (IDR 10,000 per foreign child; IDR 5,000 per domestic adult) under Perda No. 1/2024, as listed on Dinas Pariwisata Sumba Barat Daya (checked 2026-09-16). Carry small IDR notes; villages do not take cards. Dress modestly and ask before photographing people or homes, which is precisely why a local guide is worth having.
When is the day-trip radius at its widest?
The dry season, roughly May to October, is when every time in the tables above holds. June, July and August are the most reliable months, with about 30°C average temperatures and roughly a 9 percent chance of rain according to a 30-year satellite analysis, though high-end rooms, cars and guides in Wanokaka sell out early. September and October give the same roads with fewer visitors and somewhat softer prices.
From November to April the wet season shrinks the radius. Afternoon downpours are the norm and mornings usually stay workable, so half-day trips near the resort still run. The Kodi full day becomes marginal in January and February, when unpaved sections turn to mud and the river crossing on the way to Lapopu can close for a day at a time. Plan the long drives for the morning and keep the afternoon for the resort.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I visit Ratenggaro and Weekuri from NIHI in a single day?
Yes, with a private 4×4 and a 7 am departure. Each is roughly 2.5-3 hours one way from Wanokaka, and they sit 30-40 minutes apart in Kodi, so Ratenggaro, Mandorak and Weekuri fit one loop. Expect 9-11 hours door to door, the Weekuri entry fee (IDR 20,000 per foreign adult, IDR 10,000 per foreign child, IDR 5,000 per domestic adult under Perda No. 1/2024) and a village contribution at Ratenggaro.
Is Lapopu waterfall worth the drive from Wanokaka?
Yes in the dry season. It is 75-105 minutes each way plus a 15-20 minute walk, so it works as a long half day and leaves the afternoon free. In the wet season the access road and river crossing deteriorate, and the falls can be unsafe after heavy rain; ask your guide the morning of, not the night before.
Do I need to leave NIHI to see a Pasola or a megalithic village?
No. Wanokaka has its own Pasola field and stone-tomb villages such as Praigoli within 10-25 minutes of the resort, and Waikabubak’s Praijing and Tarung are under 75 minutes away. Pasola dates in February and March are set by local priests a few weeks ahead, so build flexibility into the trip rather than booking around a fixed date.
