**Five days in Sumba works best as three beach days and two village days, all on one side of the island. Base on the West Sumba coast at Wanokaka, give the sea the mornings, keep the megalithic villages for two full days, and never drive more than three hours in one day. Travel between May and October.**
Most five-day plans fail because they treat Sumba like Bali, where any beach and any village sit an hour apart. Sumba is larger than Bali, its roads are rough and partly unpaved, and the drive from the Wanokaka coast to East Sumba’s Walakiri beach eats a whole day each way. The plan below stays in West and Southwest Sumba, where the swell coast and the densest cluster of peaked-roof villages sit within reach of a single base.
Why does a 3-2 split beat trying to see everything?
Because the two things people fly to Sumba for, empty surf beaches and living megalithic villages, are concentrated in the same corner of the island. West Sumba Regency holds Wanokaka, Marosi and Kerewei beaches on the coast, with Tarung and Praijing villages on the ridges around Waikabubak, about an hour inland. Southwest Sumba adds Kodi, where Ratenggaro’s tall roofs face the Indian Ocean, plus Weekuri lagoon and Mandorak.
Three beach days give the coast enough slack for a flat morning or a rain squall. Two culture days cover four to six villages without rushing the introductions that make a visit welcome rather than intrusive. This is the same logic behind our 5-day Nihi Sumba trip: every night in Wanokaka, with villages reached as day loops rather than as stops on a relocation.
A five-day trip with three different hotels is not a trip. It is three check-ins with driving in between.
What does the sample five-day split look like?
The table assumes arrival at Tambolaka (TMC), the airport for West and Southwest Sumba, and a coastal base in Wanokaka. NIHI Sumba at Hoba Wawi and Lelewatu are both in Wanokaka, roughly 60-90 minutes from TMC depending on road conditions. Cap Karoso at Karoso Beach, Kodi, is about 50 minutes from TMC by the resort’s own estimate, and the same split works there with the Kodi villages swapped in.
| Day | Type | What you do | Drive time (indicative) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Beach | Land at TMC, transfer to Wanokaka, first swim before sunset | 60-90 min |
| 2 | Beach | Surf or swim at Wanokaka, afternoon at Marosi and Kerewei | 30-60 min total |
| 3 | Culture | Tarung and Praijing near Waikabubak, Lapopu waterfall on the way back | 1-1.5 h each way |
| 4 | Culture | Wanokaka valley villages such as Waigalli and Praigoli, late beach hour | Under 1 h |
| 5 | Beach | Dawn on the sand, breakfast, transfer to TMC for the flight | 60-90 min |
Day 1 and Day 5 are half-days, which is why the count still reads as three beach days: the coast gets an afternoon, a full day and a morning. Nobody lands from a one-hour Bali flight plus a ninety-minute transfer wanting a village walk.
From a Kodi base, swap Day 3 for Ratenggaro and Wainyapu with a Weekuri swim, and keep Day 4 for the Waikabubak ridge villages, accepting a loop of around two hours each way.
How should you behave in a Sumbanese village?
These villages are homes, not museums. Families live under the peaked roofs, stone tombs sit in the courtyard, and a guest is expected to arrive properly. A private driver-guide handles the introductions, which is the practical reason for using local guides rather than self-driving.
- Ask before photographing people, houses or tombs. A nod from the elder who receives you is the permission, not the guide’s wave.
- Dress modestly: shoulders and knees covered. Swimwear stays at the beach.
- Bring betel nut (sirih pinang) as a courtesy gift; most guides carry it for you.
- Do not climb on tombs or sit on raised house platforms uninvited.
- Keep voices low if a ceremony is under way, and follow the guide’s lead on whether to stay.
- Drones need explicit permission and usually a fee.
Contributions are expected and fund roof repairs and ceremonies. The ranges below come from a Sumba fee guide updated 19 August 2026; regencies set their own rates, so treat them as a planning range.
| Item (as of 2026) | Typical amount |
|---|---|
| Traditional village contribution | IDR 20,000-50,000 per group, IDR 50,000-100,000 in some regencies |
| Waterfalls and lagoons | IDR 20,000-200,000 |
| Weekuri lagoon | IDR 20,000 per person |
| Drone fee | Around IDR 200,000 |
| Airport tourist tax on arrival | IDR 50,000 (about USD 3.50) |
Carry small notes. Card machines do not exist in villages, and cash points are thin outside Waikabubak and Tambolaka.
Which months make both the coast and the villages work?
The dry season runs roughly May to October, as of 2026. Several Sumba-focused planners call June to September the sweet spot, and a 30-year satellite analysis flags June, July and August as ideal, with average temperatures near 30°C and roughly a 9 percent chance of rain. Dry-season days sit at 27-32°C, and the sea off the west and south coasts holds 26-28°C with the most consistent swell.
For a culture-and-beach split, dry roads matter more than dry skies. Village tracks in the Wanokaka valley turn to mud in January and February, when afternoon downpours swell the rivers and stretch a 60-minute loop into two hours.
| Window | Coast | Villages | Booking pressure |
|---|---|---|---|
| June-August | Best swell, 26-28°C sea | Dry tracks, ceremonies common | High: book villa, 4×4 and guide months ahead |
| September-October | Still reliable | Dry, quieter roads | Lower: fewer visitors, somewhat lower prices |
| April and November | Mixed | Mostly passable | Moderate |
| January-February | Workable mornings | Mud, swollen rivers | Low, but the split is impractical |
High-end room supply on the island is small, so June-August trips need the villa, the 4×4 and the guide held together early. NIHI Sumba’s public rates page states that room rates exclude a 21 percent government tax and service charge, and its March 2026 price document quotes in IDR, so an indicative room figure from spring can shift by the time you pay.
What is the most common mistake on a five-day trip?
Over-driving. It usually starts with one sentence in a planning chat: “Can we add Walakiri and the Wairinding hills?” Both are in East Sumba, served by Waingapu (WGP), on the far side of an island bigger than Bali. From Wanokaka that is a full day’s drive each way. Fit it into five days and you spend two of them looking at the road.
The signs you have over-planned:
- More than one day with three or more hours in the car.
- Two or more hotel changes.
- Villages visited “on the way” in under twenty minutes each.
- Sunset scheduled from a moving vehicle.
The fix is a rule: five days stays on one side of the island. East Sumba belongs to a seven or eight-day trip that arrives at TMC and departs from WGP, or the reverse.
On cost, the honest number is the land-only one. Indonesia Juara Trip’s ladder for 5D4N is USD 459, 700 or 850 per person as of 2026, excluding the resort; totals that include resort nights are issued only as a confirmed quote once availability is checked with the hotel. We are an independent Sumba travel provider and not affiliated with NIHI Sumba, which we list as one lodging option alongside Lelewatu, Cap Karoso and boutique villas.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I fit both the Waikabubak villages and Ratenggaro into five days of culture and beaches?
Yes, if you accept one longer loop. From a Wanokaka base, Tarung and Praijing take one culture day at 1-1.5 hours each way, and a Kodi day to Ratenggaro and Weekuri runs about two hours each way. Keep the other three days on the coast and skip any East Sumba addition. From a Cap Karoso base, reverse the loops.
How much cash should I carry for village contributions on a five-day Sumba trip?
Budget IDR 400,000-800,000 per couple for two culture days as of 2026: four to six villages at IDR 20,000-100,000 each, plus waterfall or lagoon entry of IDR 20,000-200,000 and IDR 50,000 airport tax. Carry it in IDR 20,000 and 50,000 notes. Cash points are scarce outside Waikabubak and Tambolaka, so withdraw in Bali before flying.
Is the three-beach, two-village split realistic in the wet season?
Not in January or February, when mud and swollen rivers turn short village loops into half-day drives and beach access tracks soften. November, December, March and April can work if you move villages to the mornings and keep afternoons at the pool, since rain tends to arrive after lunch. For the split as written, aim for May to October.
