A Nihi Sumba trip from Bali is a domestic flight of about one hour, Denpasar (DPS) to Tambolaka (TMC), then 60-90 minutes by private 4×4 to Wanokaka on the West Sumba coast. Indonesia Juara Trip builds it as a 3-, 5- or 7-day add-on to your Bali dates, with the flight held by you or arranged by us.
> We are an independent Sumba travel provider (Indonesia Juara Trip). This website is not owned, operated, sponsored by, or affiliated with NIHI Sumba. NIHI Sumba is mentioned as one accommodation option; bookings are subject to the hotel’s confirmation and terms.
How does a Nihi Sumba trip from Bali fit together?
Three legs, one of them in the air. The DPS to TMC sector is a domestic flight of about one hour. Schedules change by season and carrier, so we never publish a timetable; we check the live schedule against your dates.
| Leg | Indicative time (as of 2026) | Who handles it |
|---|---|---|
| Bali base to DPS domestic terminal | Depends on where you stay; allow a traffic buffer | You, or your Bali host |
| DPS to TMC (Tambolaka / Lede Kalumbang) | About 1 hour in the air, domestic | Flight held by you, or arranged by us on request |
| TMC to Hoba Wawi, Wanokaka (NIHI Sumba’s location) | Around 60-90 minutes by road, conditions vary | Private 4×4 driver-guide, included |
| TMC to Lelewatu, Wanokaka | About 63 km, indicatively 1-1.5 hours | Private 4×4 driver-guide |
| TMC to Cap Karoso, Kodi (Southwest Sumba) | About 50 minutes, per the resort’s estimate | Private 4×4 driver-guide |
Tambolaka is the gateway for West and Southwest Sumba; Waingapu (WGP) serves East Sumba and only enters the picture on a cross-island week. The road leg is real driving on partly unpaved surfaces, so your landing time shapes day one.
Can you reach the coast the same day you leave Bali?
Yes, and it is the normal pattern. A morning departure from DPS puts you at TMC before midday and at your lodge by early afternoon. A late-afternoon flight pushes the road leg into dusk, workable in the dry season but slow in January and February when rivers swell.
The return is where people get caught. Stacking a Sumba road transfer, a domestic sector and an international check-in into one evening leaves no slack. Take a morning TMC departure with hours of buffer at DPS, or overnight in Bali on your own arrangements.
What do the Bali levy and arrival paperwork cost?
| Item (as of 2026) | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bali tourism levy | IDR 150,000 per international visitor | Since 14 February 2024; triggered by transiting Bali |
| Sumba airport tourist tax | IDR 50,000 (about USD 3.50) | On arrival, per a Sumba fee guide updated 19 August 2026 |
| Visa on arrival | About IDR 500,000 | 30 days; check your nationality’s eligibility |
| Electronic customs and health declarations | No fee | Within three days of arrival (Sumba FAQ, 10 September 2026) |
| Village contributions, waterfalls, lagoons | IDR 20,000-50,000 per village (up to IDR 100,000 in some regencies); IDR 20,000-200,000 per site | Cash; Weekuri lagoon is IDR 20,000 per person |
Carry small IDR notes: site fees are cash and ATMs are sparse outside Waikabubak and Tambolaka.
Which add-on format from Bali suits your dates: 3, 5 or 7 days?
Sumba is larger than Bali with slower roads, so geography sets the format. Short trips stay on one side of the island; only a week should cross it.
| Format | Nights | Where you sleep | What it covers from a Wanokaka base | Land-only reference (excludes resort) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| [3 days 2 nights](/nihi-sumba-trip-3-days-2-nights/) | 2 | NIHI Sumba or a comparable Wanokaka lodge | Beach, one village visit, Lapopu waterfall or Marosi and Kerewei beaches | Quote on request |
| [5 days 4 nights](/nihi-sumba-trip-5-days-4-nights/) | 4 | One or two lodges, West and Southwest Sumba | Wanokaka coast plus Kodi: Ratenggaro, Weekuri lagoon, Mandorak | IJT ladder USD 459 / 700 / 850 per person, land-only |
| [7 days 6 nights](/nihi-sumba-trip-7-days-6-nights/) | 6 | West or Southwest lodge, then East Sumba | Cross-island: arrive TMC, Central Sumba megaliths, Walakiri, Wairinding, Tanggedu, depart WGP | Quote on request |
Most couples land on the 5-day version, because it adds the Kodi coast without a second airport. The [4 days 3 nights](/nihi-sumba-trip-4-days-3-nights/) and [6 days 5 nights](/nihi-sumba-trip-6-days-5-nights/) pages show what an extra night buys.
Timing matters as much as format. The dry season runs roughly May to October; a 30-year satellite analysis flags June, July and August as ideal, with about 30°C averages and roughly a 9 percent chance of rain, and those months need lodges, cars and guides booked well ahead. September and October bring fewer visitors and somewhat lower prices. Skip January and February for anything beyond a single-lodge stay.
What does it cost, and what is a quote versus a listed price?
Two price layers exist and they should never be added together on a website.
The first is Indonesia Juara Trip’s land-only ladder, published at luxurysumba.com/sumba-trip-cost as of 2026: 4D3N USD 390 / 490 / 570, 5D4N USD 459 / 700 / 850 and 6D5N USD 570 / 1,020 per person. Land-only covers driver-guide, vehicle and routing; it excludes the resort.
The second is the resort’s own rate. According to NIHI Sumba’s public rates and inclusions page, room rates are exclusive of a 21 percent government tax and service charge; its price document dated March 2026 quotes in IDR with USD converted at the prevailing rate, and on-island experiences are priced separately.
We do not publish a package total that includes the resort. It is issued as a confirmed quote by the Indonesia Juara Trip team once the hotel confirms dates and room category. See [Nihi Sumba trip cost](/nihi-sumba-trip-cost/) and [price per night 2026](/nihi-sumba-price-per-night-2026/).
How does booking from Bali work?
- Send your Bali dates. WhatsApp or email your Bali arrival and departure flights, group size and the format you lean towards.
- Receive a routing. Within a working day: a day-by-day plan, lodge options (NIHI Sumba, Lelewatu, Cap Karoso or a boutique villa) and the live DPS-TMC schedule.
- Hotel confirmation. We request your room category; the lodge confirms or offers alternatives under its own terms.
- Flight decision. You hold the DPS-TMC sector, or we arrange it so the road transfer matches the landing time.
- Confirmed quote and deposit. One written total for land services and, where you asked us to include it, the resort. Nothing is estimated.
- Meet at Tambolaka. Your private 4×4 driver-guide meets the flight; see the [Tambolaka to Nihi Sumba transfer](/tambolaka-to-nihi-sumba-transfer/) page for the road leg.
How should you pack for Sumba compared with Bali?
Sumba is drier, dustier, more traditional and far less serviced than Bali’s south.
- Covered shoulders and knees for village visits, and ask before photographing people or homes; that etiquette is why a local guide travels with you.
- Closed shoes with grip for waterfall paths and lagoon rocks, plus sandals for the beach.
- Cash in IDR, small notes, for contributions and site fees.
- Sun protection. Dry-season days sit around 27-32°C with thinner shade than Bali.
- A light rain layer for November to April, when showers arrive in the afternoon.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I book my Bali to Sumba flight first or plan the itinerary first?
Plan first, book second. The DPS-TMC schedule changes by season, and the flight time decides whether you reach Wanokaka in daylight and whether your return leaves buffer at DPS. Send us your Bali dates, let us confirm lodge availability and the live schedule, then hold the sector yourself or ask us to arrange it.
Do I pay the Bali tourism levy if I am only transiting Bali to reach Sumba?
Yes. The IDR 150,000 levy has applied to international visitors since 14 February 2024 and is triggered by entering Bali, including a transit to a domestic flight. Budget it alongside Sumba’s IDR 50,000 airport tourist tax listed in the fee guide updated 19 August 2026. Neither fee is included in our quotes.
Is a 3-day Nihi Sumba trip from Bali worth the flights?
It is, provided you stay on one side of the island. Two nights in Wanokaka give you the beach, one village visit and a waterfall or the Marosi and Kerewei coast, all within short drives. It cannot cross to East Sumba; that needs the 7-day format with a Waingapu departure.
Is Sumba more expensive than Bali for luxury lodging and logistics?
Usually yes, per night. Luxury room supply on Sumba is a handful of properties, and NIHI Sumba’s 2026 rates are quoted exclusive of a 21 percent tax and service charge. Ground logistics cost more too, since everything runs on a private 4×4 with a driver-guide. Village fees and food are modest.
