Sumba is larger than Bali and its roads are rough and partly unpaved, so the first filter is geography, not style. NIHI sits at Hoba Wawi in Wanokaka, West Sumba Regency, roughly 60-90 minutes by road from Tambolaka (TMC), conditions permitting. An alternative on the same coast keeps your driving days intact. An alternative in Kodi or East Sumba rewrites them.

Two of these, Lelewatu and Cap Karoso, are what most clients mean when they ask for a Sumba luxury trip without Nihi: full-service resorts where the room, the kitchen and the transfers run at a comparable standard. The other three trade service depth for price, privacy or a better position on the map.
What changes in experience and cost when you swap the lodge?
Less than people fear on the road, more than they expect on the bill.
On the same coast, nothing about the days moves. Wanokaka’s villages, Lapopu waterfall, the beaches at Marosi and Kerewei and the surf all stay within day-trip range from Lelewatu or a Kerewei villa. What changes is the in-house programme. NIHI prices its on-island experiences separately, per person or per couple in IDR, according to its 2026 price document dated March 2026. At a villa, your private 4×4 driver-guide becomes that programme instead, and the menu is whatever the island offers that day.
Move to Kodi and the map flips. Ratenggaro, Weekuri lagoon and Mandorak become short hops from Cap Karoso, while Wanokaka turns into the long day out. Move to East Sumba and you are on a different island in all but name: Wairinding’s grass hills, Walakiri’s mangroves at low tide, Tanggedu’s canyon, horses on the Puru Kambera savannah.

Those land-only figures come from Indonesia Juara Trip’s published Sumba trip cost ladder, as of 2026, and they cover the ground side of the trip only. The three price points per duration reflect different inclusion levels, confirmed at quotation. The lodge is quoted on top, and any total that includes a resort, NIHI or otherwise, is issued only as a confirmed quote by the Indonesia Juara Trip team once the hotel has confirmed availability.
What should you do when NIHI is fully booked for June to August?
June, July and August are the months a 30-year satellite analysis flags as ideal for Sumba: around 30°C on average and roughly a 9 percent chance of rain. They are also the months when high-end room supply on the island runs out, and cars and guides go with it. Work the problem in this order.
- Ask for the same coast first. Lelewatu or a Wanokaka and Kerewei villa keeps every West Sumba day exactly as planned.
- Shift by two or three weeks. September and October bring fewer visitors and somewhat lower prices, the dry season still holds through October, and the sea stays about 26-28°C.
- Split the stay. Two nights in Kodi at Cap Karoso plus two or three nights in Wanokaka is easier to secure than one five-night block, and it upgrades the route.
- Lock the ground before the room. In July the private 4×4 and driver-guide are often the scarcer resource; hold them while the hotels are being asked.
- Treat NIHI as a bonus, not a dependency. Register interest for cancellations directly with the hotel if you wish, but build the confirmed trip around a lodge that has already said yes.
How do you keep the same itinerary skeleton with a different lodge?
The rule for Sumba is fixed by the roads. Three- and four-day trips stay on one side of the island; seven- and eight-day trips can cross it, arriving at Tambolaka and departing from Waingapu or the reverse. Only days 2 and 3 swap their “long day” label depending on which coast you sleep on; everything else is identical. Stretch to 7D6N or 8D7N and you add East Sumba on the far end, departing from Waingapu instead of doubling back. Avoid attempting that crossing in January and February, when mud and swollen rivers stretch West-East transfer times and make a three- or four-day circuit impractical.
Which fees and rules stay the same whichever lodge you choose?
The lodge changes the bill; the island does not change its rules.
- Airport tourist tax: IDR 50,000, about USD 3.50, on arrival, according to a Sumba fee guide updated 19 August 2026.
- Village contributions: IDR 20,000-50,000 as a rule, IDR 50,000-100,000 in some regencies. Waterfalls and lagoons run IDR 20,000-200,000; drone permits are around IDR 200,000.
- Entry paperwork: Indonesia’s visa on arrival is 30 days for about IDR 500,000, and the electronic customs and health declarations are completed within three days of arrival, per the Sumba FAQ of 10 September 2026.
