Which day trips does a Wanokaka base unlock?
From NIHI or Lelewatu you are already inside West Sumba’s densest cluster of beaches, villages and falls. A private 4×4 driver-guide is the practical way to move.

- Waikabubak market and the hilltop villages of Tarung and Prai Ijing: 45-60 minutes.

Which day trips does a Kodi base unlock?
Cap Karoso puts you on the far western tip of the island, and the Kodi menu is short-drive, high-yield. Everything below is 30-60 minutes by road, indicative.
- Ratenggaro, the megalithic village with the tallest peaked roofs in Sumba, on a river mouth facing the surf.
- Weekuri lagoon, a tidal saltwater pool behind the reef; entry IDR 20,000 per person as of 2026.
- Mandorak beach, a pocket cove next door to Weekuri.
- Wainyapu and Bwanna, the second village and the arched limestone cliff further down the coast.
The catch is what Kodi does not reach: Lapopu, Waikabubak’s villages and anything in Central Sumba become 2-3 hour drives each way from Karoso Beach. That is why the two resorts are complements, not substitutes.
How long is the drive between Wanokaka and Kodi?
Drivers usually route north from Wanokaka to Waikabubak, west along the Trans-Sumba road toward Tambolaka, then south-west into Kodi; a southern back road via Lamboya exists, but guides treat it as a dry-season option. Our planning estimate is 2.5-3.5 hours door to door in the dry season. Treat it as a half-day with a stop, not a hop.

Season changes these numbers. Sumba’s dry season runs roughly May to October, and June to September is the window most Sumba planners treat as the sweet spot, with about 30°C averages and roughly a 9 percent chance of rain according to a 30-year satellite analysis. In January and February, mud and swollen rivers stretch every leg on this table, and the inter-resort transfer can eat most of a day.
In which order should you stay at the two resorts around the flight days?
Bali (DPS) to TMC is a domestic hop of about one hour; schedules change often enough that we never publish timetables. The rule we use: put the resort with the shorter airport run on whichever end of the trip has the tighter flight timing.

Sequence B is the one we book more often, because an early TMC departure with a 50-minute run is calmer than the same flight with a 90-minute run and a river crossing. Either way, give each base a minimum of two nights; in June-August, book villas, cars and guides well ahead, because high-end room supply on the island is small.

Technically yes, practically no. Ratenggaro and Weekuri sit 2.5-3.5 hours each way from Wanokaka, so a “day trip” means six to seven hours in the car for two or three hours on the ground. Sleep at both bases instead; two nights each covers both menus without a rushed cross-regency loop.
