Flights to Sumba from Bali: How the One-Hour DPS-TMC Hop Works

Flights to Sumba from Bali are a domestic hop of about one hour from Ngurah Rai (DPS) to Tambolaka (TMC), the West Sumba gateway for NIHI Sumba, Lelewatu and Cap Karoso. Schedules change, so check current airline listings, book a morning arrival for a same-day resort transfer, and check whether Bali’s foreign tourist levy applies to you.

Sumba has no international airport, so nearly every luxury Sumba itinerary routes through Bali first. This short domestic leg decides whether day one is spent on a beach or in a lounge. Here is how the hop works as of September 2026 and what to verify before you pay.

Which airport should you fly into: Tambolaka or Waingapu?

Two commercial airports serve the island. Which one you pick depends on where you sleep on night one and whether your trip crosses Sumba.

Airport Code Regency served Indicative road time to lodges (as of 2026)
Tambolaka / Lede Kalumbang TMC West and Southwest Sumba NIHI Sumba (Hoba Wawi, Wanokaka) 60-90 min; Lelewatu (Wanokaka, about 63 km) 1-1.5 h; Cap Karoso (Karoso Beach, Kodi) about 50 min per the resort’s own estimate
Umbu Mehang Kunda / Waingapu WGP East Sumba Base for Walakiri, Wairinding hills, Tanggedu and Puru Kambera; several hours by 4×4 from the Wanokaka coast

For a 3D2N to 8D7N Nihi Sumba trip from Bali, TMC is the airport that matters, because NIHI, Lelewatu and Cap Karoso all sit on the western side of the island. Sumba is larger than Bali and its roads are rough and partly unpaved, so a 3-4 day trip should stay on one side. Only a 7-8 day itinerary should be booked open-jaw: fly Bali to TMC, cross the island with a private 4×4 driver-guide, and fly home from WGP (or the reverse).

How long is the Bali to Sumba flight, and can you trust the timetable?

The DPS-TMC sector is roughly one hour in the air. Add boarding, taxiing and disembarkation and the airport-to-airport time is closer to two hours.

What you should not trust is any timetable printed on a travel blog, including this one. Carriers and frequencies on this route have shifted several times, and departure times move by season. Our practice:

  1. Check the current airline listings the week you book.
  2. Check again about 72 hours before departure, because retimings are usually pushed by SMS or email and are easy to miss.
  3. Send the final flight number to whoever is meeting you at TMC.

Bali-to-Sumba departures have tended to cluster in the morning, which suits the transfer logic below, but treat that as a tendency to verify, not a fact to plan around.

Why does a morning arrival at Tambolaka matter so much?

Because the airport is not the destination. From TMC you still have 50 to 90 minutes of driving to any of the three luxury lodges, on roads where you want daylight.

Arrival window at TMC What it means for day one
Before noon Check in with the afternoon free; a swim or a first village visit is realistic
Early afternoon Comfortable transfer in daylight; arrive for late lunch or sunset
Late afternoon or later Transfer in fading light on partly unpaved roads; some lodges set transfer cut-off windows, and a short trip loses most of a day

The wet season sharpens this further. From November to April rain usually arrives as afternoon downpours while mornings stay workable, so a morning flight also puts you at the resort before the roads get slick. In January and February, the heaviest months, mud and swollen rivers stretch West-East transfer times, which is another reason short trips should never attempt a cross-island circuit then.

What are the baggage and surfboard rules on this route?

The aircraft on this sector are regional types, and allowances are set per airline and fare class, not per route. Two things catch guests most often: a checked allowance lower than their long-haul ticket gave them, and surfboards.

Verify these on the airline’s listing before you buy; the numbers change and we will not publish figures that may be stale by the time you read them:

  • Checked baggage allowance for your fare class, and the per-kilo excess rate.
  • Whether sports equipment is accepted at all on the aircraft type operating your date.
  • Maximum board length and bag dimensions, plus the oversize fee and whether it must be pre-booked.
  • Cabin allowance, because regional overhead bins are small.
  • Whether a codeshare or separate ticket changes any of the above.

If you are travelling for the swell on Sumba’s west and south coasts, most consistent in the dry season with sea temperatures of about 26-28°C, budget the board fee and pre-register the board. Some lodges keep guest boards; ask before flying yours across.

Do you pay the Bali tourism levy if you only transit Denpasar?

Check how the levy’s scope applies to your plans. Bali’s foreign tourist levy is IDR 150,000 per person, paid once, for international tourists who travel to Bali and do tourist activities (exemptions apply, e.g. crew members and KITAS/KITAP holders), as listed on Love Bali (checked 2026-09-16). Pay it online before landing or at the airport counters.

It is one of several small charges on the way to the island. As of 2026 the stack looks like this:

Charge (as of 2026) Amount When it is paid
Indonesia visa on arrival Published by Indonesian immigration; check the current fee before you travel On arrival at DPS
Electronic customs and health declarations Free Completed within three days of arrival (Sumba FAQ, 10 September 2026)
Bali tourism levy IDR 150,000 per person, paid once, for international tourists who travel to Bali and do tourist activities (exemptions apply, e.g. crew members and KITAS/KITAP holders), as listed on Love Bali (checked 2026-09-16) Online or at DPS
Laguna Waikuri (Weekuri) entry IDR 20,000 per foreign adult (IDR 10,000 per foreign child; IDR 5,000 per domestic adult) under Perda No. 1/2024, as listed on Dinas Pariwisata Sumba Barat Daya (checked 2026-09-16) In cash on site

Carry small IDR notes. Village contributions and lagoon fees are cash-only and vary by regency, one reason a local driver-guide earns his seat in the car.

What is the connection checklist for an international arrival via Bali?

Most guests land at DPS on a long-haul flight and want to be on Sumba fast. This is the order of operations we use when building a quote:

  1. Book the two legs to fit each other. Separate tickets carry no protection if the international flight is late. For long-haul arrivals, one night near the airport and a morning flight the next day is the arrangement that fails least.
  2. Clear immigration and customs first. Visa on arrival, bag collection and customs at DPS take time, and the domestic terminal is a separate walk.
  3. Pay the Bali levy in advance so it does not become a queue.
  4. Re-check the domestic departure time 72 hours out and confirm the flight number with the lodge or with Indonesia Juara Trip.
  5. Match the resort transfer to the flight number, not the clock, so the driver tracks the actual arrival.
  6. Pre-register any surfboard or oversize bag.
  7. Book early for June to August. Peak months need advance booking of villas, cars and guides because high-end room supply on the island is small, and flights in that window fill too.

When is the best time of year to fly to Sumba?

The dry season runs roughly May to October, and several Sumba-focused planners call June to September the sweet spot. A 30-year satellite analysis flags June, July and August as ideal, with about 30°C average temperatures and roughly a 9 percent chance of rain; dry-season rainfall drops to a few millimetres a month, against 200 mm-plus in parts of the wet season.

September and October bring fewer visitors and somewhat lower prices than June to August, which for many guests is the better trade. April and November are mixed shoulder months. In January or February, plan a one-side-of-the-island trip, morning flights, and patience with delays.

A note on who we are: this site is run by Indonesia Juara Trip, an independent Sumba trip planning desk. It is not owned, operated, sponsored by or affiliated with NIHI Sumba. NIHI Sumba, Lelewatu and Cap Karoso are accommodation options we can build into an itinerary; availability is subject to hotel confirmation and each hotel’s terms. Indonesia Juara Trip’s Sumba Private Trip 4D3N is priced per person by group size (2–10 guests), including twin-share hotel, entrance fees and 9 meals: USD 390–700 per person in its 2025 USD table, and Rp 5,600,000–10,600,000 per person in its 2026 IDR table, as listed on Indonesia Juara Trip (checked 2026-09-16). Any total that includes a resort is issued only as a confirmed quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you fly from Bali to Sumba in the morning and reach NIHI Sumba the same day?

Yes, in normal conditions. The DPS-TMC flight is about one hour, and NIHI Sumba at Hoba Wawi, Wanokaka is around 60-90 minutes by road from Tambolaka, so a morning departure typically lands you at the resort by early afternoon. Confirm the departure time on the current airline listing and give the lodge your flight number so the transfer tracks any delay.

Do I have to pay the Bali tourism levy if I only change planes at Denpasar?

Check the levy’s scope against your plans. Bali’s foreign tourist levy is IDR 150,000 per person, paid once, for international tourists who travel to Bali and do tourist activities (exemptions apply, e.g. crew members and KITAS/KITAP holders), as listed on Love Bali (checked 2026-09-16). The levy applies to international visitors; domestic travellers are outside its scope. Pay it online before arrival to avoid a counter queue, and keep the receipt on your phone.

Can I bring a surfboard on the flight from Bali to Tambolaka?

Usually, but only within each airline’s sports-equipment rules for the aircraft type flying that day. Check the maximum board length, bag dimensions, the oversize fee and whether pre-registration is required on the current airline listing before you buy. Regional aircraft on this route have tighter limits than long-haul jets, and some lodges keep guest boards, which can save the fee entirely.
