How far can you actually get from Wanokaka in one day?
Sumba is bigger than Bali, and much of its road network is narrow, winding and only partly paved. A distance that would take 30 minutes in Bali often takes an hour here. The figures below are indicative one-way drive times from Wanokaka as of 2026, based on dry-season conditions with a private driver; add 20-40 percent in the wet months.

The closest cluster, Wanokaka itself plus Lamboya’s beaches, can be done between breakfast and a late lunch. The Kodi coast in Southwest Sumba is a long, worthwhile day rather than an impossible one, provided you leave by 7 am.
This is the logic behind our 4 days 3 nights trip: one base in Wanokaka, two full excursion days, no re-packing. A three-night stay comfortably absorbs one half-day near the resort and one long day to Kodi.
What separates a half day from a full day?
A useful rule for Sumba: if the one-way drive is under 90 minutes, it is a half day; if it is over two hours, treat it as a full day and do not stack another destination on top. Time on the ground matters as much as time in the car.
- Half-day format (4-5 hours door to door): one megalithic village with a local guide, or two beaches, or Lapopu with the walk down to the pools. Leave after breakfast, back by 2 pm.
- Full-day format (9-11 hours door to door): the Kodi loop of Ratenggaro, Mandorak and Weekuri, with lunch packed or eaten at a warung near Ratenggaro. Leave by 7 am, back before dark; Sumba roads are unlit and livestock wander onto them after sunset.
- Do not combine: Lapopu and Kodi on the same day. They lie in opposite directions from Wanokaka, and the combined drive tops seven hours.
Why is East Sumba not a day trip from NIHI?
Because the numbers do not close. Waingapu, the East Sumba gateway, sits around 170 km from Wanokaka by way of Waikabubak and the Trans-Sumba road. In good conditions that is five to six hours one way; the East Sumba sights are then a further 30 minutes to two hours beyond Waingapu.

A day trip would mean 11-13 hours in a 4×4 for perhaps 45 minutes at one viewpoint, and in January and February swollen rivers and mud can add hours more. Guests who want both coasts need a 7- or 8-day itinerary: fly into Tambolaka, base in Wanokaka for three or four nights, drive east with stops in Central Sumba’s megalithic villages, then fly home from Waingapu (WGP). Three- and four-night trips stay on one side of the island.

A private 4×4 driver-guide is the only realistic way to cover the Kodi coast in one day from Wanokaka and the only way to convert a NIHI stay into a cross-island trip. Resort excursions suit guests who want one or two easy outings without planning. Package totals that include the resort are issued only as a confirmed quote, never as a published figure.
Fees per destination are small but frequent. A Sumba fee guide updated 19 August 2026 lists an airport tourist tax of IDR 50,000 on arrival, traditional village contributions of IDR 20,000-50,000 (IDR 50,000-100,000 in some regencies), waterfall and lagoon entries of IDR 20,000-200,000, Weekuri lagoon at IDR 20,000 per person, and drone fees around IDR 200,000. Carry small IDR notes; villages do not take cards. Dress modestly and ask before photographing people or homes, which is precisely why a local guide is worth having.
When is the day-trip radius at its widest?
The dry season, roughly May to October, is when every time in the tables above holds. June, July and August are the most reliable months, with about 30°C average temperatures and roughly a 9 percent chance of rain according to a 30-year satellite analysis, though high-end rooms, cars and guides in Wanokaka sell out early. September and October give the same roads with fewer visitors and somewhat softer prices.
