Two of the four sit on the Wanokaka coast, the same West Sumba shoreline as NIHI at Hoba Wawi, so the West Sumba day routes are unchanged. Cap Karoso moves your base southwest, shortens the airport run and puts Ratenggaro and Weekuri within a short drive.
What actually changes when NIHI is not on the itinerary?
Less than the marketing suggests, but not nothing.
- Private beach and house wave. NIHI’s sand and surf break are guest-only. The substitutes are the public beaches at Marosi and Kerewei and breaks along the Kodi coast; the west and south coasts carry the most consistent swell, conditions vary, and a driver-guide who reads the tide matters.
- On-property programmes. NIHI’s signature experiences do not travel. Lelewatu and Cap Karoso run their own spa, kitchen and cultural programmes.
- Rate structure. NIHI’s public 2026 rates page states rooms are exclusive of a 21 percent government tax and service charge. Other lodges publish their own conventions; we quote each from its current 2026 rate sheet and date the figure.
- Availability. High-end supply is small everywhere. Lelewatu and Cap Karoso fill for June to September much as NIHI does. September and October are quieter with somewhat lower prices.
- Total cost. The lodge component usually drops. The land-only portion does not, because the 4×4, guide and fuel cost the same wherever you sleep.
How does a 4D3N or 5D4N trip look without NIHI?
Both samples stay on the western side. Sumba is bigger than Bali, roads are rough and partly unpaved, and a cross-island run belongs in a 7-8 day format that arrives at TMC and departs Waingapu (WGP), or the reverse.

When should a NIHI-free trip travel?
Sumba’s dry season runs roughly May to October. Several Sumba-focused planners call June to September the sweet spot, and a 30-year satellite analysis flags June, July and August as ideal, with averages near 30°C and roughly a 9 percent chance of rain. Dry-season days sit around 27-32°C and the sea holds about 26-28°C.
The trade-off is demand: villas, cars and guides for June to August need booking months ahead. September and October bring fewer visitors and softer prices; April and November are mixed shoulders.
The wet season runs November to April and peaks in January and February, when rain arrives as afternoon downpours and mornings stay workable at 26-31°C. Mud and swollen rivers stretch West-East transfers in those months, so we will not build a 3-4 day cross-island circuit in January or February.
