A high-end Sumba trip without NIHI

NIHI is not the only good bed on the island, and on some dates it is not an available one. Here is what the alternatives actually are.

Where else you would sleep

Four options, in the order we usually raise them. Each changes what your days look like, not just your room.

    Lelewatu, West Sumba

    Ridge position inland of the south coast, built around Sumba village architecture. Closest in feel to NIHI’s half of the island.

    Cap Karoso, Kodi

    Out west on the Karoso coast. Puts Weekuri, Ratenggaro and Pero within an easy morning instead of a long day.

    Smaller and eco-led, attached to a local school foundation. A different proposition from a resort, and honest about that.

    A handful, mostly on the west coast, with very few rooms each. They move in and out of availability quickly.

None of these is a NIHI substitute on its own terms. They are good beds in their own right, which is a different claim.

How this one is priced

Exactly as any other trip here: our land arrangements, plus whatever the property confirms.

  • Group size

    The biggest lever by far. Per-person cost falls steadily to eight travellers, then rises again when a second car is needed.

  • Where you sleep

    Standard hotels sit inside the land rate. Resort nights are quoted by the hotel and added on top, on confirmation.

  • How far the route reaches

    Staying in the West is one base. Adding the East means an open-jaw ticket and a second base, and both carry cost.
