NIHI Sumba and Cap Karoso in one trip

NIHI sits on the Wanokaka coast, Cap Karoso out west near Kodi. Pairing them puts the far west within reach without a long day each way.

In short

They pair well because they sit at opposite ends of the same western half — NIHI for the Wanokaka side, Cap Karoso as the base that makes Weekuri, Ratenggaro and Pero an easy morning instead of a long day.

The shape

How the nights divide

The point of this pairing is the second base. From the Kodi end, the far west stops being a day trip.

  1. The arrival hotel at Tambolaka, Sumba 01

    Arrive Tambolaka

Land at TMC, transfer to the first base. The airport sits between the two ends, which is what makes this work.

    Tambolaka

  2. Peaked thatch roofs of Prai Ijing village, West Sumba 02

    The Wanokaka side

The villages and ridge country inland of the south coast, from the NIHI end.

    Prai Ijing, West Sumba

  3. Open grass hills and the road through Sumba 03

    West to Kodi

Around two hours, broken by stops. It is the only real transfer on the route.

    The road west

  4. Ratenggaro village and its tall thatch roofs, Kodi 04

    Kodi, from the doorstep

Ratenggaro, Pero and Weekuri as short mornings rather than a single exhausting day.

    Ratenggaro, Kodi

  5. The rock arch at Mbawana beach, Southwest Sumba 05

    Depart Tambolaka

Back east to TMC. Allow the morning; the Kodi end is the further of the two.

    Mbawana, Southwest Sumba

Cap Karoso is the further base from the airport. On departure day we build in the extra hour rather than hoping for it.

We do not mark up a resort rate. The hotel confirms it and you see that figure.

How this one is priced

No published band, for the same reason as any resort pairing: the hotels set the two largest lines.

  • Group size

The biggest lever by far. Per-person cost falls steadily to eight travellers, then rises again when a second car is needed.

  • Where you sleep

Standard hotels sit inside the land rate. Resort nights are quoted by the hotel and added on top, on confirmation.

  • How far the route reaches

Staying in the West is one base. Adding the East means an open-jaw ticket and a second base, and both carry cost.

The published land rate card covers 4D3N, 5D4N and 6D5N, with every figure dated: /nihi-sumba-trip-cost/
