How far ahead should you book NIHI Sumba by season?
Sumba’s dry season runs roughly May to October, and several Sumba-focused planners call June to September the sweet spot. A 30-year satellite analysis flags June, July and August as ideal, with average temperatures near 30°C and roughly a 9 percent chance of rain. Demand follows the weather, and so does lead time.

Two caveats. A specific villa category (one particular treehouse, one multi-bedroom estate) behaves like a peak product in every month, so add two months to your row. And Christmas-New Year sits in the wet season on paper but tends to book like August.
Why does the small room count matter more than the island’s remoteness?
Sumba feels remote, but getting there is not the hard part. Bali (DPS) to Tambolaka (TMC) is a domestic flight of about one hour, and NIHI Sumba at Hoba Wawi, Wanokaka in West Sumba Regency sits roughly 60-90 minutes by road from the airport, conditions permitting. Schedules change through the year, so we never publish timetables.
Supply is the hard part. Sumba is larger than Bali, yet its stock of genuinely high-end rooms is a fraction of what one Bali village offers. NIHI Sumba, Lelewatu (also in Wanokaka, about 63 km from TMC) and Cap Karoso (Karoso Beach, Kodi, Southwest Sumba, around 50 minutes from TMC by the resort’s own estimate) each count their keys in the dozens, not the hundreds. When a July week fills at one property, it is usually filling at the other two as well, and the private 4×4 driver-guides who make the island workable are being booked by the same travellers.
That is why lead time is set by scarcity rather than distance. A seat on the DPS-TMC hop can often be found weeks out; a specific villa in August usually cannot. If you want to compare NIHI against Lelewatu, Cap Karoso or a boutique villa before committing, the cleanest route is to book your Nihi Sumba trip as a dated request and let one desk check all of them at once.
What should you lock first: flights or the hotel?
Hotel first, always, and in this order.
- Villa or lodge request. Send preferred dates plus one alternative week, guest count, villa category and any fixed constraint (a birthday, a surf window, a connecting international flight). This goes to the hotel for confirmation.
- International flight into Bali. Hold or ticket this once the hotel confirms.
- DPS-TMC domestic sector. Book after the villa dates are confirmed, never before, and keep a buffer night in Bali if your international arrival lands late. Transiting Bali triggers the IDR 150,000 tourism levy that has applied to international visitors since 14 February 2024.
- Driver-guide and 4×4. Sumba’s roads are rough and partly unpaved; 3-4 day trips stay on one side of the island, while 7-8 day itineraries can arrive TMC and depart Waingapu (WGP) in East Sumba. In peak months the good driver-guides go as early as the villas.
- Experiences and village visits. NIHI prices on-island experiences separately per person or per couple in IDR, per its 2026 price document dated March 2026. Village contributions run IDR 20,000-50,000 (IDR 50,000-100,000 in some regencies) and Weekuri lagoon charges IDR 20,000 per person, per the Sumba fee guide updated 19 August 2026.
Paperwork slots in last: Indonesia’s visa on arrival is 30 days for about IDR 500,000, the airport tourist tax on arrival in Sumba is IDR 50,000 (about USD 3.50), and the electronic customs and health declarations are completed within three days of arrival.

The rate line deserves a note. As of 2026, NIHI Sumba’s public rates and inclusions page states that all room rates are exclusive of a 21 percent government tax and service charge, and its 2026 price document quotes in IDR, with USD converted at the prevailing rate and the final charge based on the rate at payment. Any USD figure in a quote is indicative until money moves.
Indonesia Juara Trip’s own land-only ladder, as of 2026, is USD 390, 490 or 570 per person for 4D3N, USD 459, 700 or 850 for 5D4N and USD 570 or 1,020 for 6D5N, and it excludes the resort entirely. A package total that includes NIHI or any other lodge is not a published price; it is issued only as a confirmed quote after the hotel has answered.
What does “subject to hotel confirmation” mean in practice?
Three things.
- A request is not a reservation. Until the hotel writes back with a confirmation, you hold nothing, even if the desk replied within the hour.
- The hotel sets the rate and the terms. Deposit percentage, payment deadline, cancellation windows and any minimum-stay rule are the hotel’s, relayed to you before you pay. An independent desk cannot waive them.
- Availability can change between the check and the deposit. In June-August the gap between “space exists” and “deposit received” is where bookings are lost. Answer a hold offer the same day.
The earlier you ask, the more likely the hotel’s answer is “yes, at this rate” rather than “waitlist” or “alternative dates only”.
What if the dates you want are already gone?
Late requests are not dead requests. The fallbacks that work most often:
- Shift by a week. A failed July request often succeeds for the last week of August or the first of September, when the weather is still dry and prices soften.
- Split the stay. Two nights at NIHI plus three at Lelewatu or Cap Karoso can be easier to confirm than five straight nights in one villa, and shows more of West and Southwest Sumba.
- Change the villa category. Flexibility on room type is worth more than flexibility on dates in peak months.
- Book a boutique villa and keep NIHI for the next trip. Sumba’s coastline does not depend on one address.
Whichever route you take, send alternates from the start. A single-date request in peak season is the slowest kind to answer.
