When is the swell window for a Sumba surfing trip with a NIHI stay?
Sumba’s dry season runs roughly May to October, and the most consistent swell hits the west and south coasts, where Wanokaka sits. Several Sumba-focused planners call June to September the sweet spot; a 30-year satellite analysis flags June, July and August as ideal, with about 30°C averages and roughly a 9 percent chance of rain. Sea temperature is around 26-28°C.
As of 2026, June-August is peak: high-end room supply on the island is small, so villas, 4x4s and driver-guides need booking months ahead. September-October brings fewer visitors and somewhat lower rates with swell still running. The wet season (November-April, heaviest January-February) means afternoon downpours and swollen rivers; we do not recommend a surf-led trip then.
How does wave access at NIHI Sumba actually work?
The house wave in front of the resort, known to surfers as Occy’s Left, is managed by the hotel. Based on the resort’s own public description of its surf programme, daily surfer numbers are limited and slots go to in-house guests through the hotel, not through us.
- A surf slot is a hotel product. We request it with the room; it is confirmed only when NIHI confirms it.
- Cap, price and policy can change without notice. We do not control the wave or promise a private line-up.
- Surf guiding, board hire and boat access are priced separately by the resort, per person, in IDR, per its 2026 price document dated March 2026.
If the house wave is full, or you are staying at Lelewatu or a Wanokaka villa, the fallback is a private 4×4 with a local surf guide. Marosi and Kerewei sit on the Wanokaka side; Pero in Kodi is roughly 50 minutes from Tambolaka and pairs with a Cap Karoso night. Every spot is indicative until your guide reads swell and tide that morning.

What do non-surfing partners do while you surf?
Sessions usually finish by mid-morning, leaving the driver-guide a full day for:
- Villages. Hamlets around Wanokaka and Kodi keep megalithic tombs and peaked-roof houses. Contributions run IDR 20,000-50,000, up to IDR 100,000 in some regencies; the guide asks permission before anyone photographs people or homes.
- Water. Lapopu waterfall and Weekuri lagoon (IDR 20,000 per person, per the fee guide updated 19 August 2026) fit a half day each. Drone fees run around IDR 200,000.
How do you fly surfboards from Bali to Tambolaka?
Bali (DPS) to Tambolaka (TMC) is a domestic flight of about one hour. Schedules change often, so we never publish timetables.
- Check the airline’s sporting-equipment rule before ticketing. The DPS-TMC route is often flown on smaller aircraft with tighter hold limits. Length caps and surcharges are set by each airline and change without notice.
- Travel light. One or two shortboards in a padded single bag, fins off, travel far more reliably than a coffin bag or a longboard.
- Have a plan B. Board hire at the resort is subject to the hotel’s availability; our team can source boards on-island on request.
- Arrival costs. Airport tourist tax is IDR 50,000 (about USD 3.50). Transiting Bali triggers the Bali tourism levy of IDR 150,000 per international visitor, in force since 14 February 2024. Visa on arrival is 30 days for about IDR 500,000; electronic customs and health declarations are filed within three days of arrival.

Is five nights enough for a Sumba surfing trip with a NIHI stay?
Five nights in the June-September window gives three to four surf days with a realistic chance of clean west-coast swell, plus a buffer day for travel and a village outing. Any shorter, and one flat spell or a delayed flight removes most of your surfing. Seven nights is better if the house wave is the main target.
What boards should I bring for a Sumba surfing trip with a NIHI stay?
For the Wanokaka reef breaks most intermediate and advanced surfers pack one everyday shortboard and one step-up, plus reef booties.
