What does East Sumba add that the Wanokaka coast does not have?
West Sumba around NIHI Sumba and Lelewatu is surf, cliffs, waterfalls and megalithic villages in green hills. East Sumba is the dry side of the island: open savannah, limestone ridges, a mangrove beach on flat tidal sand, and the heartland of Sumba ikat weaving. Same island, different light.

With three East nights the reach extends to Tarimbang on the south coast or the Laiwangi-Wanggameti park edge, each a long day on rough road. With one or two nights, the five places above are the programme.
Which trip lengths can carry an East Sumba leg?
The East costs one full travel day for the crossing. Whatever duration you choose, subtract that day before you count touring days. That is why every 3D2N and 4D3N on this desk stays on one side of the island, and why the East starts at five days.

Three West nights is the floor at any length. Arrival day is mostly transfer, around 60-90 minutes by road from Tambolaka to Hoba Wawi with conditions varying, and the resort is the reason you booked. The East is added to a resort stay, never carved out of it.
If NIHI Sumba has no availability for your West nights, Lelewatu, also in Wanokaka, keeps the same geography and the same crossing. Cap Karoso sits in Kodi, Southwest Sumba, on the far side of Tambolaka; pairing it with the East adds a second long drive and belongs to a different trip.
Where do you sleep in East Sumba, and how does it compare with the Wanokaka resorts?
Plainly: as of 2026 there is no East Sumba property comparable to NIHI Sumba or Lelewatu. Waingapu’s supply is a beachfront hotel or two outside town, a handful of villas, and clean town hotels. You leave a resort for landscapes. Guests who know that in advance are the ones who rate the East leg highest.

We quote the best-available tier by default because the East days start early and end at sunset, and a pool between Tanggedu and Walakiri earns its keep. No Waingapu hotel is a partner of ours; it is an option, and availability is subject to the property’s confirmation like everywhere else on the island.
One practical difference: East Sumba hotels do not run the on-island experience programmes a resort does. Everything you do in the East is arranged through your driver-guide.
How does the cross-island drive work?
The crossing runs from the Wanokaka coast up to Waikabubak, east through Anakalang in Central Sumba, past Lewa and down to Waingapu. Budget roughly 160 km and five to six hours including stops, indicative and dry season only. The main trans-Sumba road is the best surface on the island; the rough kilometres are the spurs to the coast and the track to Tanggedu.
- One vehicle, one driver-guide, no handover. The 4×4 that collects you at Tambolaka is the one that drops you at WGP.
- Early start. Leaving the resort by 08:00 puts you in Waingapu before dark with a village stop and lunch in Waikabubak or Lewa.
- Matayangu waterfall in Central Sumba is a two-to-three-hour detour on a dry track. It fits an 8D7N; on shorter trips it costs you the East’s sunset.
- January and February are off. Mud and swollen rivers stretch the crossing unpredictably, so we do not run it in those months. Ask for West-only or East-only instead.
There is no scheduled public transport worth building a resort trip around, and no short-hop flight between TMC and WGP that we would plan on. The drive is the leg.
Why fly open-jaw, and in which direction?
An open-jaw ticket through Bali means you never cross the island twice. Two directions work.
- Resort first. DPS to Tambolaka (TMC), Wanokaka nights, crossing, Waingapu nights, WGP to DPS. Landscapes come after the surf.
- Resort last. DPS to Waingapu (WGP), East nights, crossing westward, Wanokaka nights, TMC to DPS. The softest nights close the trip, and the resort’s spa or surf is the send-off.
Most guests choose the second once they hear it. Both are domestic hops of about an hour from Bali; schedules on the WGP and TMC sectors change, so we check the seat map for your exact dates before you commit a resort deposit, and we confirm the whole plan against your issued tickets rather than a timetable.
What does the East leg cost, and what fees come up on the road?
Indonesia Juara Trip’s published ladder is land-only, excludes the resort, and stops at six days. Adding the East to any length means the ground programme absorbs one extra driving day, plus Waingapu nights as a separate line.

Transiting Bali adds the IDR 150,000 tourism levy in force since 14 February 2024. Visa on arrival is about IDR 500,000 for 30 days, with electronic customs and health declarations due within three days of arrival, per the Sumba FAQ of 10 September 2026. Resort nights, Waingapu nights, flights and resort experiences are separate lines on the quote.
When is East Sumba at its best?
Sumba’s dry season runs roughly May to October, and the East is the drier side. The savannah turns gold from July, Walakiri needs low tide near sunset, and Tanggedu needs a dry track. Several Sumba-focused planners call June to September the sweet spot, and one weather-data service’s multi-decade satellite analysis flags June to August as ideal, around 30°C with roughly a 9 percent daily chance of rain.

Walakiri’s tide is checked against a tide table for your actual date, not assumed. If sunset falls at high tide, the East day is re-ordered so the mangroves get the low-water hour instead.

- Receive an itemised quote within a working day: ground programme, indicative resort rate, Waingapu nights by tier, fees.
- Hold the rooms. Availability is requested from the resort and the Waingapu property; nothing is confirmed until each confirms.
- Match the flights. We check DPS-TMC and WGP-DPS seats for your dates in the direction you chose, then confirm the plan against the tickets you buy.
- Deposit, then travel. The deposit locks the driver-guide and vehicle for the whole route; the balance follows the quote.

Can I add East Sumba to a five-day Nihi Sumba trip?
Yes, as a one-night taster in the dry season. You keep three nights on the Wanokaka coast, cross on the fourth day, see Prailiu on arrival and Walakiri at sunset, and fly out of WGP the next morning. It depends on your WGP flight time, which we check before quoting. Six days gives the East one full touring day.
Is there a luxury resort in East Sumba comparable to NIHI Sumba?
No, not as of 2026. Waingapu offers a beachfront hotel or villa as its best tier, then town hotels. The East leg trades resort comfort for savannah, mangroves and ikat villages, so we place it after or before the resort nights rather than in place of them, and we quote the best-available tier by default.
Should I do East Sumba before or after the resort?
Either works with an open-jaw ticket. Resort first means DPS to TMC in and WGP out; resort last means WGP in and TMC out, finishing on the Wanokaka coast. Most guests prefer to finish at the resort. Flight schedules change, so we check seats for your dates before you commit a deposit.
Do I have to drive back to Tambolaka after East Sumba?
No. Umbu Mehang Kunda airport (WGP) in Waingapu serves East Sumba with domestic flights to Bali, so you leave from the side you finish on. Driving back west would cost a second five-to-six-hour day. The only time we plan a return drive is when a guest insists on a single Bali round-trip ticket, and we advise against it.
