The island rewards families, but the drives are long and the roads are rough. Which parts work depends more on the car time than the ages.

What actually works

The days children remember

Four things here hold a child’s attention for a full morning. We build the trip out of those and keep the driving between them short.

    Water they can get into

    The Weekuri lagoon is shallow, still and saltwater. It is the single most reliable morning on the island with children.

    Horses

    Sumba is a horse island and children take to it immediately. Short rides on sand or grass, led, not loose.

    The peaked-roof villages are genuinely interesting for about forty minutes. We plan for forty minutes.

    A waterfall, if the road allows

    Worth it when the track is dry. The last stretch is walking, so we check whether it suits your youngest before we commit the day.

How a family quote works

A family of four or five sits in the middle of the published rate card, which is the useful part.

  • Four travellers is a good number

    One car still fits everyone, and the per-person rate drops sharply against a couple travelling alone. We quote the exact figure for your party in writing.

  • Five is where a second car appears

    At five the rate rises again, because one car no longer fits everyone comfortably with luggage.

  • Children in the room

    Rates are per person twin share. How a child shares a room, and what that costs, is set by the hotel.
