Adding Sumba to a Bali trip

Most people arrive in Sumba from Bali, and many go back afterwards. Done in the right order it is one short flight and two very different halves of a holiday.

Sumba works best at the start, while you still have the energy for early mornings, with Bali afterwards to wind down. Five or six days on Sumba is the length that justifies the connection.

The order

Why Sumba goes first

The two islands ask for completely different things from you. The sequence is not arbitrary.

    Sumba runs on early mornings

    Everything worth seeing here is best at first light and the drives are real. That is easier on day two of a holiday than on day twelve.

    It is a short, strong list

    Lagoons, villages, a coast and the hills. Five days covers it properly without repeating yourself.

    About an hour in the air. We put you on a flight that lands with the afternoon still usable at the other end.

Plenty of people do it the other way round and enjoy it. We just think the early mornings land better at the start.

How the two halves fit together

Three practical points people ask about once the idea is settled.

  • Leave a bag in Bali

    Most Bali hotels will hold luggage between stays. Sumba is light packing and a small domestic allowance.

  • Book Sumba first

    Sumba has very few beds and Bali has many. Fix the scarce half, then build Bali around it.

  • Do not connect on the same day

    Arriving internationally and flying on to Sumba the same day works only if the timings are generous. Usually they are not.
