Why does a 7-day Nihi Sumba trip cross the island?
Sumba is larger than Bali, and its roads are rough and partly unpaved, so a 3- or 4-day trip has to stay on one side. Six nights is the first length that lets you start on the surf coast of Wanokaka, cross the megalithic heartland of Central Sumba and finish in East Sumba’s savannah without backtracking.
Two things follow from that. You fly open-jaw, into Tambolaka and out of Waingapu. And a private 4×4 driver-guide becomes the spine of the week, because there is no scheduled transport between the two halves of the island.

How are the six nights split?

How does the open-jaw flight work?
Book Bali (DPS) to Tambolaka outbound and Waingapu to Bali inbound as two one-way domestic sectors. We do not publish timetables because Sumba schedules change through the year; the concierge checks live availability before any resort night is requested. Three points as of 2026:
- DPS to TMC is roughly one hour in the air. If the Waingapu flight day does not line up with your Bali connection, the route runs in reverse: arrive WGP, finish at NIHI or a comparable lodge, depart TMC.
- Transiting Bali triggers the Bali tourism levy of IDR 150,000 per international visitor, in force since 14 February 2024.
- A Sumba fee guide updated 19 August 2026 lists an airport tourist tax of IDR 50,000 (about USD 3.50) on arrival.
What does the 4×4 driver-guide include?
The vehicle and guide are arranged by Indonesia Juara Trip through vetted, licensed local partners. Standard inclusion on the 7-day route:
- Private 4×4 with driver-guide from arrival at TMC to departure at WGP, fuel and the driver’s meals included
- All transfers, the Day 3 and Day 4 excursions, the Day 5 crossing and the Day 6 East Sumba loop
- A local guide who handles village permission, modest dress and photo etiquette, and who knows which river crossings are passable after rain
Paid locally, as of 2026 and varying by regency: village contributions of IDR 20,000-50,000 (IDR 50,000-100,000 in some regencies), waterfall and lagoon entries of IDR 20,000-200,000 (Weekuri lagoon IDR 20,000 per person), and drone fees around IDR 200,000 where drones are permitted at all.

Visa on arrival is 30 days for about IDR 500,000, with electronic customs and health declarations completed within three days of arrival, according to the Sumba FAQ of 10 September 2026.
When should you travel, and what changes in January-February?
Sumba’s dry season runs roughly May to October. Several Sumba planners call June to September the best window, and a 30-year satellite analysis flags June, July and August as ideal: about 30°C on average with roughly a 9 percent chance of rain on any given day. Peak months need advance booking of villas, cars and guides because high-end room supply on the island is small; September-October brings fewer visitors and somewhat lower rates.
The caveat for this particular route: the wet season runs November to April, heaviest in January and February. Mornings usually stay workable, but afternoon downpours, mud and swollen rivers stretch West-East transfer times. In those two months we quote the Day 5 crossing with extra buffer, or recommend a one-side trip and a shorter stay.

Can a 7-day Nihi Sumba trip run in reverse, from Waingapu to Tambolaka?
Yes. Arriving at WGP, spending two nights in East Sumba, crossing to Wanokaka and departing from TMC works just as well, and it places the resort at the end of the week. We suggest the reverse when the Waingapu flight day fits your Bali connection better, or when you want the softest landing after the road days.
How long is the cross-island drive on Day 5?
Plan a full travel day: indicatively five to seven hours including stops at the Central Sumba megalithic villages and lunch in Waikabubak, on roads that are partly unpaved. In January and February, mud and river crossings can add hours, which is why wet-season quotes carry extra buffer.
Is 7 days 6 nights enough to add Cap Karoso as a second resort?
Yes, with a 1 + 3 + 2 split: one night at Cap Karoso in Kodi, about 50 minutes from TMC by the resort’s own estimate, three nights in Wanokaka, two in East Sumba. You give up one Wanokaka night, but Weekuri and Ratenggaro become a short morning from Kodi rather than a long day trip from Wanokaka.
What if NIHI Sumba has no availability for my 7-day dates?
We tell you during the availability check and offer the same route with Lelewatu, also in Wanokaka, or a boutique villa on the west coast. The itinerary, driver-guide and East Sumba nights stay unchanged; only the resort line of the quote moves.
